Skogshyddan Ultimate Göteborg
Skogshyddan wins EUCF
With a very successful season behind us there was only Europeans left before the season would come to an end. This time it would be Florence, Italy that hosted the tournament. A city more known for its importance during the renaissance. A warm evening greeted us we headed out of the airport terminal in search of cabs. We quickly found a line with people waiting for a cab, but no cabs in sight. After a while however we were all on our way to the hostel. The tournament was underway....
Friday morning greeted us with nice and sunny weather and after the typical Italian breakfast (dry bread and a drink) we headed over to the fields and started warming up. First game would be against the rising Swiss team Freespeed, a team that we beat in semi at WCU in April. Then the conditions were very windy and it was zone all the way. This time it would be different as there was no wind to be felt.
After a good start we were able to control the game and cruise to a comforting win, 15-9. The game was not one of our best, but it still felt comfortable considering this was our first game.
Our second game of the day would be against British team Brighton, seeded fourth in the pool. No problems here except for an incredibly bad start from us. Time out and win with 15-4.
Last game of the day would be Mir San Zamperl from Munich. We knew this would be a though game were we had to stay focused throughout the whole game. Just as predicted, the game was close and hard fought, but with Skogs able to get some more D's and some scores. In the end our hard practice schedule during fall paid off as MSZ started to run out of steam towards the end and we were three for three at the end of the day.
As predicted in the forecast, Saturday saw overcast and light rain. Our first game would be the Italian team CUSBO from Bologna. CUSBO had finished fourth in their pool and proved no problems for Skogs who won comfortably, 15-6.
In the quarter final we had predicted to face Fire of London, but were surprised to see some familiar faces. It turned out that Fusion had won their pre-quarter over Fire of London.
Skogs came out at their highest pace and with the adrenaline pumping and gave Fusion no chance at advancing into the semis. We played really well and defense was getting turns on almost every point. The game was won at 15-6.
In the semi-final we would face a very familiar team, Ragnarök from Denmark. We've played this team several times over the years and it has always been tight and hard fought games. As the rain had been falling most of the afternoon, the field was wet and slippery, making it difficult getting a good grip when cutting.
This game was no different than other games against Ragnrök. First half saw teams trading points with Ragnarök having a small lead and looking to talk half by a two point lead after some nice defense. But great defense from Skogs offense and a great lay out from Lace got the disc back and then the score. Then defense got another one and converted it to take half.
During the second half Skogs started to get their focus right and both defense and offense played well. A couple of mistakes from the Danes an no mercy shown by Skogs saw us get another win, 15-10.
Sunday afternoon and yet another final with Clapham on the other side. Conditions were good with mostly sun and gusty winds. We were really fired up and felt confident we could win yet another game against Clapham, never having lost any final games.
After trading a few points at the start of the game, Skogs defense really started to get into gear and were able to open up a two point lead. Clapham fought back and had the disc to tie the score, but Skogs offense wanted different and after another defense conversion, Skogs took half leading by two.
Second half saw offense struggle but fighting hard on defense and getting most discs back and scoring. Both David Wesley and Martin Filipovski came up with huge plays and were two very dominating factors and a good reason that Skogs could maintain their lead. Defense stepped it up a notch and got two more d's before Peter Sandin, assisted by Pär Mattsson, could score the final point of the game. Skogs had done it again, both beaten Clapham and become European Champions. Final score 15-11.
