Order restored!

One and a half week before the EUCF 2008 I got the depressing news. "Tobias you have got a time for your surgery, you are to be operated on Wednesday 22th of October." I really considered saying no to the operation but after a discussion with the nurse there was no way I could do that, if you got a time to the No1 foot surgeon in the country you don’t say ¨No thank you!¨. I realised that there would be no EUCF more for me, not this year and not later on either. After an hour of thinking I decided to go anyway, we lost the final last year and I really wanted to help my team mates to restore the order again, with Skogs on top.
On Thursday evening everyone gathered at the nice hotel in La Défense, far from the fields. Due to a fuck up by the organisers we had to fix our own hotel, and the only one with a reasonable standard and ditto price was one hour away from the fields. Anyhow there was no disappointment over this since we'd had a good week and where really psyched for the weekend.
Friday's first game was against last year's hosts from Basel, Freespeed. We had some serious problems in the beginning of the game. The lack of team work was obvious! If you don't know it, it's pitch black back home in Gothenburg from 16.00 this time of year so practises had been a utopia. But as the game progressed we soon got the upper hand. Even in the first half but in the second the old Skogs machine started to wear down the opponents, 15-10 Skogs.
The second game of the day was Fusion. I really don't remember much about the game except that we won it big, 15-5 or something like that. Late in the evening we had our last game against Feldrenner from Mainz. A tricky opponent which they have shown us a couple of times during the years. As in the game against Freespeed the game was even in the beginning but in the end, the depth of the Skogs squad proved to be to much for the German team. I really don't know what was said in the ring after the game but we got some hotheads in our team, that’s true. But with foul calls like the ones that Feld called we just had to protest. Nuff said I think. Oh yeah, the score, 15-9 Skogs.
We could take the tram to dinner and finally head back to the hotel for an hour, knowing that we had no pre-quarter and played our first game on Saturday at 12.00
Saturday came with heavy rain over La Défence and we were glad to stay indoors during the rainy morning, knowing that our opponents in the quarter final were out playing at 9.00. We took the train to the fields quite focused for a match against our countrymen from Örebro, but to our surprise the devils from Prague had beaten them. The quarter was against a new opponent for us, funny! I wonder if Prague thought it was funny? They said in the ring after the game that they were glad to have scored 8 points and maybe they should be. We came out with a furious defence and shut our opponent down. Of the first 6 points we scored five and David Pan did his second Callahan of the tournament. 8-3 at half time and the match was of course over and we started to focus on the semi against Chevron.
Some six years ago Chevron fucked up our trip to Hawaii by beating us and sending us out of the quarter finals. It was time again and we were confident after our previous matches during the weekend. The game was delayed until 20.15, it was windy, dark and cold when the game started. It was obvious that a goal up wind would be worth a lot. We got some early breakes but couldn't score. In the middle of first half we were able to score two valuable goals up wind and shutting down Chevy's tries. We took half in the lead but with one star player injured. The second injury occurred in the second half when Stefan decided to block a pass with his face. Nice try Stefan, but the foul was on you!! The other bad thing was our offence in the second half. Chevron managed to score three straight goals, two up wind. After that we got the things together again and scored three own goals and the semi was over, 11-6 in our favour.
Dinner at the place with the smallest toilet in the world, 1 hour of subway (we hill billies from Sweden's second largest city aren't used to things like that), shower and then the sack.
Sunday, final the game we've been longin' for, practising and this year against the Fire of London. First time we met these gentlemen was in Basel and our main memory of that game was their hard running.
We were prepared for some really hard and tough offence and defence but when the game started we got nervous or something like that. We spread our hucks outside the field, and for the first time during the weekend the O-line didn't take the disc back. Fire managed to get an easy lead with 4-1 before we got some our game going again, and that was after a couple of hard arguments that worked as ignition for us. At 4-1 we got our game going and goal by goal we chewed up Fires lead and soon the score was 4-4, and our opponents started hanging their heads, probably wondering what happened after that great start.
Led by players like Nas, Pär and Sebastian we know started to run away from the more and more tired Englishmen and half time was ours despite of the lousy beginning, 8-6.
The second half continued very much like the first one ended. We were the stronger team and no matter what Fire tried we had an answer to it. Soon Markus Lund could deliver a perfect pass to Joel Högberg and the victory was ours, the order was restored.
To sum up the weekend:
Top players – Pär Matsson, keyplayer our main man during the whole weekend. Sebastian Sporrong, nuff said. A star player in Furious George and in my opinion the best in Europe. Joel Högberg and Markus Lund, not only for the last goal but safe handling during the whole tournament. Nas & Fas – Nas was huge in the final and Fas showed really strong defence and some sick layouts.
But the winning thing isn't the separate players but the team spirit and the high quality of all players. No matter who played, the defence was intense and offence often flawless.
Funniest- victory of course and David Pan missing the train at Charles de Gaulle. Wrong man at the wrong place!!
Over and out!!
