For the first time the north east qualification round for the EUCF was played outside Finland. Stockholm and Syndromes were the hosts this year, and greeted all the teams with a first taste of autumn, sun, rain, wind and temperatures ranging between sweaty heat and freezing cold.
Our deal in the first group were EZ, Norwegian newcomers and Sweden´s upcoming team, Viksjöfors. A strange seeding since Viksjöfors have showed great strength last year and this.
We started terribly against the Norwegians, underestimation and lack of team work gave our neighbours a two goal lead before our offense could produce their first goal. The same problems showed in the D-line where we definitely missed playing together for a while. We managed to get some interceptions but were unable to score. As the match went on we soon started to get a grip of the Norwegians and the victory was quite comfortable in the end. I won´t comment on the major incident that occurred in the game, I wasn´t close enough or something like that.
In the afternoon it was time for the toughest game of the weekend, against Viksjöfors. Both D-line and O-line started to get the game going and the score 15-10 illustrates that we played really well. We could leave the fields for some food and drink while our opponents had to stay for pre-quarters.
Sunday morning, early as hell, before the bird songs we met Taskas from Lithuania. It is always fun to meet new teams and see that the ultimate is growing on the eastern shores of the Baltic sea. It became obvious that the young Lithuanians had a lot of respect for Skogs and that they have a lot to learn. They played a tricky zone defence against us but the offense had wound up from Saturday and in the end we were quite superior. But our opponents are athletic and they I think they have a thing going on. Keep up the spirit and continue playing hard games guys and soon you will be a really strong team.
Semi against last years opponents in the National final, Örebro. Easy game I´m sorry to say. I definitely hope that it was a reaction after qualifying to the Europeans that showed. We know you're stronger than in this game. Go home, practice hard and we´ll meet in your hometown at the Swedish Nationals.
And finally the last game, the final. This time against HUT from Helsinki. If the semi was easy, the final was even more uneven! Flawless offense and a Trojan slaughter defence ended the game 15-5 in our favour. As in the case with Örebro I seriously hope that this was a reaction after having qualified for Paris. But on the other hand you managed to catch the ferry back to Suomi.
To summarize the weekend: after a bit om misunderstandings and a team work that didn´t work we got the old Skogs machine rolling again. Offense was sharp and had no problems with zones, poaches or man/man defence. After loosing a couple of guys, among them the top goal scorer from Worlds and the Wizzboy, one would think that we should have more problems in the offence. But we left the problems behind in the first game. The problems in the defence stayed a bit longer. We still got a lot of interceptions but had some scoring problems. Since the D-line consisted of virtually 7 players new to each other this was inevitable. But as we got further in to the tournament we got more well played together.
Our newcomers Emil and Andreas performed really well. As with us older players they had some problems in the first game but the problems were gone on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday.
We hope to have some more junior player or players in the Swedish Nationals.
See you all in Paris!!
Over and out!!
